Ready Player One: Pages 99-248
150 pages later, the plot of Ready Player One has picked up fast. After the beginning of the novel took a while to develop setting characters, I'm glad that we've been able to dive into the storyline.
That being said, one of the main plot points we're introduced to is Parzival and Art3mis' relationship. As far as relationships go, Parzival and Art3mis are pretty cookie cutter. Parzival's long term crush reciprocates his feelings and everything seems perfect. Until Art3mis decides that he's getting in the way of her hunt for the egg.
After this is when we finally see some emotion come from our main character. So far Wade hasn't shown much strong emotion towards anything besides finding the egg so I was glad to see that Wade was genuinely upset when Art3mis said she didn't want to be in a relationship. I think that seeing his character develop is important to me as a reader because before this point in the novel it was hard for me to relate to him as having many emotions at all.
Something I didn't mention in my last blog post is that I think it's noteworthy that Art3mis is treated with respect as a gunter as a female just as her male counterparts. The fact that the rest of the cast of characters are male is disappointing, but it might've been the author's intention to go along with the stereotype that usually boys are more interested in video games.
Daito's death has caused a major upset in the story arc and I'm excited to see how the character's will take on the Sixers from here on out!

I really like how you pointed out that Art3mis is respected as being a female gunter. It is very stereotypical that boys play videos games and its unusual to see girls doing so. I like how stereotypical Wade's crush is on Art3mis. I feel like in this type of setting any guy playing the game would feel the same way Wade does. But who really knows if she is a girl? Daito's death was a huge upset for me too and I think the sixer's are taking things too far at this point, they need to be stopped by the high five, or high four now.
ReplyDeleteYou bring up a really good point on the character building aspect of this part of the book. I think it was very important for Cline to show Wades compassionate side, not to say Wade doesn't have much of a personality, but it could always be better. When wade was willing to give up his search for Halliday's Easter egg to show Art3mis how he felt I thought was very powerful. To throw the entire premise of the book out of the window was a thought provoking aspect to say the least.
