Light Finds the Death Note!!! (and Ryuk)

I'm going to start off by saying I'm a huge Death Note fan. The series is really well thought out and I love the characters! But I promise I'll remain spoiler free in my posts.

Light Yagami finding the Death Note is the beginning of a chain reaction throughout the whole world.  From the beginning he doesn't hesitate to start writing names in the book, and continues even after he realizes that the notebook really works.

With that sort of power anyone would go a little crazy, and for Light it starts showing very fast. "I am righteous!... I'm the savior who's going to be like a god of this new perfect world!" (pg. 70). Light thinking of himself as a god is scary, it makes you question whether he's really doing good or not.

Meanwhile Ryuk seems to care less what Light is doing and finds the whole ordeal entertaining. Ryuk  is kind of a character that's easy to overlook, but his role as kind of watching over Light is important, he's the only one that knows about the death note besides Light himself.

Then we get to L, who is essentially Light's opposite. He's working to discover "Kira's" real identity and how he kills. L himself is a mystery though. The police don't know who he is, where he is, any of that. There are many parallels you can make between L and Light.

The plot twist we find out in this section is huge! Light's father is the head of police! I still think it's crazy that Light can feel comfortable using the death note in his bedroom while his father is downstairs, he has serious guts.

I'm excited to move forward in the manga and watch some anime in class! The anime lines up really well with the manga so I'm a big fan!

  1. I think that Light doesn't know what to do with all of the power that he's obtained with the Death Note, and he's having a hard time debating on what is wrong from what is right. At first, he acts as if he's not really going to use it as much, and then he jumps in and starts putting numerous names in the book, even killing criminals that he's never been in contact with. I don't understand how he could kill somebody, even though they're not innocent. It's still a human life, and I think he's over stepping his boundaries with the Death Note. I like that Ryuk is around, too. I think that sometimes he should voice his opinion more, but maybe he just doesn't have one to give or doesn't really think it's his business to be dealing with. Ryuk just is there for the pure entertainment of humans. When I read that Light's father was the head of the police department, I was very shocked and I have to agree, I think that was the biggest plot twist within this section as well. On another note, I'm glad to hear that you like this series, it makes me want to happily continue reading the book!

  2. I’ve never read a manga or anything like it before, but Death Note has really got me hooked! I agree that Light thinking himself a god is scary. He goes crazy and I’m not sure if it’s because of the Death Note or if he was just secretly crazy before. Ryuk is definitely my favorite character right now. His subtle comments on things and how he just sits back and watches Light makes me want to laugh. He gets almost sassy with Light at times. I don’t really have an opinion about L right now. I feel like I need to know more about him before I can come to a conclusion. I can tell that he’s really smart though. It’s obvious in the ways he’s able to know why “Kira” does things without meeting him.
